BACKGROUND:  24.9 Million victims globally are trapped in modern day slavery, almost double the population of Illinois.  26,557 calls have been placed to the national human trafficking hotline in 2017.  In Illinois, 193 cases of human trafficking were documented in 2017.  Peoria’s Center for Prevention of Abuse is the federally granted, sanctioned and trained provider of services for trafficking survivors south of Iroquois County and provider of beds for trafficking survivors in Illinois south of Chicago.

 

Carol Merna, Executive Director of the Center for Prevention of Abuse, will provide the City Council with a presentation on human trafficking in Illinois and the region.
