Communication from the City Manager with a Request to APPROVE a RESOLUTION Supporting Local Public Radio Station WCBU.

BACKGROUND: WCBU has been an integral part of Bradley University and the City of Peoria since its inception in 1970 when it transitioned from a student-run radio service to become a charter member of the fledgling organization, National Public Radio.
From their beginning, WCBU broadcasted community events, including Peoria City Council meetings and performances by the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, while providing Peorians with local news, events, and original programming unique to Peoria.
WCBU continued to meet the needs of their listening audience, by expanding to HD radio, allowing the ability to carry multiple channels from one transmitter. In 2010, programming was consolidated and Peoria Public Radio now offers two distinct program services; news and information on the main channel and 24 hours of classical music on high definition.
In addition to providing local coverage, WCBU also hosts the Radio Information Service, which broadcasts local newspapers, magazines, and grocery ads to the blind over special receivers provided free of charge.
The attached resolution for City Council consideration reaffirms the importance of WCBU and its broadcasting of local information, events, and City Council meetings. The City Council also reaffirms the importance of WCBU broadcasting from within the City of Peoria.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERNS: Citizens have expressed concerns if a local public radio station no longer operates in the City of Peoria.
IMPACT IF APPROVED: The City will make a statement in support of local public radio station WCBU.
IMPACT IF DENIED: The City will not make a statement in support of local public radio station WCBU.
