Communication from the City Manager with a Request to ADOPT an ORDINANCE Setting the COMPENSATION for AT-LARGE COUNCIL MEMBERS of the City of Peoria, Illinois

BACKGROUND: 

 

65 ILCS 5/3.1-50-5 and 50 ILCS 145/2 provides that elected officials compensation is to be set at least one hundred eighty (180) days before the beginning of the new term.  Compensation may not be increased or decreased during an elected official’s term.

 

For At-Large Council Members a new term will begin on May 9, 2023.  The deadline to set their compensation is November 10, 2022.

 

On September 13, 2022, the Council was presented with a compensation survey from the 15 most populous cities in Illinois, outside of Chicago.  The survey provides the annual salary and benefits for the elected officials of those municipalities.  On September 14, 2022, the City Clerk provided information indicating that the current salary of $16,500 went into effect for the May 2015 through May 2019 term and was again adopted for the May 2019 through May 2023 term.

 

During the discussion on September 13, 2022, Council meeting, no requests for an addition in salary was made or discussed, therefore the attached Ordinance is being proposed consistent with status quo.

 

 

FINANCIAL IMPACT: Compensation must be included in the 2023 budget and for future years.
