Title

Communication from the City Manager with a Request to Support HOUSE BILL 1646 that Would Reinstate KICKBOXING ELIMINATION TOURNAMENTS within the State of Illinois.

Body

BACKGROUND: For decades elimination novice kickboxing tournaments took place in downtown Peoria and Rockford, IL, also known as “Toughman” Competitions.  However due to subsequent changes in the laws cities in Illinois  have not been able to host these tournaments. House Bill 1646 was introduced last year with  local representatives sponsoring the Bill and it passed the House 114-0. The Bill is now in the Senate.  These events would be regulated by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations. The support of this Bill by the City Council would allow these events to occur in Peoria which would bring approximately 5,000 people to downtown Peoria on an annual basis.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:  People attending these events would patronize local businesses and restaurants.
