Body
BACKGROUND: Concerns of parents and administrators of Notre Dame High School students have been expressed to City Staff over the past couple of years regarding an unmarked pedestrian crossing. Notre Dame High School is located at the northwest corner of Glen Avenue and Sheridan Road. Since the campus is restricted for parking, students often will park in the subdivision on the east side of Sheridan Road at Sherbrook Lane. Students parking in the neighborhood are then required to cross a busy Sheridan Road during peak, morning traffic to school. The crosswalk nearest to this location is at Glen Avenue, which is considerably farther away from where students could efficiently cross Sheridan Road, at Sherbrook Lane. There is no existing safe crossing for students in this high-volume crossing location.

Council approved Staff's 2013 CIP request of $110,000 for a pedestrian crossing at this location. This project, incorporation a safer pedestrian-actuated crossing, will construct a safer pedestrian crossing on Sheridan Road near Sherbrook Lane.

The Location Map of the Project is attached. TERRA Engineering Ltd prepared the plans and specifications for the project under their Master Services Agreements #12-175 and 13-265. Several qualified firms picked up the Plans and Specifications for bidding. Bids were opened on October 3, 2014 with one bid received as follows:

Contractor Total Bid
Laser Electric, Inc. $86,949.87

Engineer's base estimate: $103,922.00.
