BACKGROUND: In almost all cases, when a structure is demolished in Peoria, the materials from the structure are transported to the landfill for disposal.

For two years, the City has been working with local and out of town people and organizations to establish a de-construction program in Peoria. De-construction is the demolition of a structure piece by piece. The end goal is multi-fold. First, the salvaged materials can be reused, repurposed, or recycled. Second, the amount (and cost) of material being sent to the landfill is reduced. Third, jobs are created by local businesses that undertake a deconstruction effort. Illinois Central College has offered a certificate course on de-construction for the past two years. During the summer of 2014, the City partnered with ICC by allowing access to a house slated for demolition in order to provide hands-on experience for students in the de-construction program.

While all of these efforts have been successful, we have not yet identified an organization that can step forward to launch an ongoing de-construction program.

Peoria Architectural Salvage is a new organization with a goal of removing specific salvage items from houses that are slated for demolition. This is not a full-fledged de-construction program, as it does not entail the removal of almost all elements of the structure. However, it could be an important and necessary step toward a de-construction program and would allow for the reuse or repurposing of materials from older structures that would otherwise be sent to the landfill.
