Body

BACKGROUND:  As an increased number of third parties seek to attach devices to poles within the right-of-way, the benefit of exercising guidance and limitations on such attachments also increases.  The proposed ordinance protects our ability to provide public safety services to residents, as needed, while ensuring access to and improved opportunities through various technological advancement.  At the same time, the City retains influence over the aesthetic and functionality of poles under its jurisdiction.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:  None

NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERNS:  There are a variety of ways in which third parties can attach equipment to utility poles, some of which are more aesthetically pleasing than others.  This ordinance seeks to deter installation of excessively large or unsightly equipment.  It will also protect the integrity of City equipment and the safety of citizens, contractors, and staff.

IMPACT IF APPROVED:  The City will have greater influence over attachments to poles in the right-of-way.

IMPACT IF DENIED:  The City will forfeit a degree of influence over attachments to poles in the right-of-way.
