ACTION REQUESTED:
Title
Communication from the City Manager and Fire Chief with a Request for the Following:
A. ACCEPT a GRANT from ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANT (AFG), in the Amount of $370,566.90, to Fund a PARAMEDIC CLASS for Nine (9) Fire Personnel; and
B. ADOPT an ORDINANCE to AMEND the City of Peoria 2021 REVISED ANNUAL BUDGET to Recognize the Receipt of an ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS (AFG) GRANT in the Amount of $370.566.90, to Fund a PARAMEDIC CLASS for Nine (9) Fire Personnel.

BACKGROUND: Overall, the Peoria Fire Department has 60 Certified Paramedics. Only 52 of them are currently in Suppression. By offering this class, it will help ensure we have enough Paramedic staff to cover all shifts.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funding for this class will come from the grant awarded to the Peoria Fire Department from AFG to help cover the costs of backfilling staff and any overtime accrued.
NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERNS: N/A
IMPACT IF APPROVED: This will ensure public safety in being able to assist those with medical needs quicker and more efficiently.
IMPACT IF DENIED: We will run the risk of a Paramedic shortage in the next two (2) years. Paramedic certification is an 18-20 month process.
