BACKGROUND: Background:
Wolf Carbon Solutions is proposing a pipeline that would collect and transport highly pressurized carbon dioxide from points of collection in Iowa, through Illinois to a sequestration site near Decatur, Illinois. At the sequestration site, the pressurized carbon dioxide is injected into wells deep underground for permanent storage. This technology has been developed as one component of the efforts to reduce global temperature rise due to excessive amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, a contributor to climate change.
Wolf Carbon Solutions is a Canadian company, funded by a large pension fund, and states that it intends to operate the pipeline long term. The company has a successful carbon pipeline operation in Alberta Canada.
The Congressional Research Service has published an information piece on carbon dioxide pipelines. (attachment)
BioUrja has purchased and operates the former ADM facility on the City's riverfront. They are considering but have not yet determine whether they will utilize the Wolf Carbon Solutions pipeline to transport products from their facility, so it is not yet known whether the pipeline spur from the main pipeline to their facility will be part of the pipeline project.
