BACKGROUND: The City of Peoria Police Department addresses traffic and speed issues throughout the city. Increasing the number of deployable speed trailers and pole mounted speed monitoring/warning devices will allow the department to address these concerns and reduce speeding events throughout the city.
The Peoria Police Department currently utilizes similar devices from this manufacturer. Officers are familiar with their operations and technical aspects. These models include built-in traffic count hardware and "SMART-stat" software, to create traffic studies with no additional charges or recurring expense.
The Smart 18 HP+ trailer will provide a large, towable speed warning device. This provides for maximum visibility to increase speed awareness and reduce traffic problems in areas of concern. This model is ideal for use near schools and areas with high rates of accidents with an 18" LED display visible up to 1,250 feet. This provides a visual notification to drivers on their speed and has red/blue overspeed violator strobes as well as red LED "SLOW DOWN" violator alerts. The PMD 12 is a portable pole mounted radar display. This unit provides a flashing digit violator alert with red-blue light bar violator alert.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The cost of the project is $27,681.00. The Peoria Police Department has applied for and was awarded a DCEO grant. Those funds will be used for the payment once received.
