BACKGROUND: In March 2023, the City of Peoria received notification of awarded funding and creation of the Greater Peoria Auto Crimes Taskforce (GPACT) in the amount of $2,150,700.00. This taskforce creates a collaboration with the Illinois Secretary of State (ILSOS) Police, who will provide project supervision/jurisdictional oversight. The city of Peoria will work closely with ILSOS to direct the day-to-day operations of the taskforce. GPACT will provide a multi-jurisdictional investigative and prosecutorial task force consisting of sworn supervisors and a sworn investigator staff member from the Secretary of State Police who will indemnify and provide Statewide jurisdiction to members of the Peoria County Sheriff's Office and the Peoria City Police Department. These investigators will be tasked with conducting comprehensive criminal investigations that are self-generated, public complaints and referrals from law enforcement, government agencies, industry organizations throughout the area involving traditional auto theft, chop shops, carjackings, synthetic identify fraud, fraudulent vehicle documents, rogue towing agencies, and insurance fraud.
